The Lawyer Who Fought Chevron for “Chernobyl of the Amazon” is Now a “Corporate Political Prisoner”

By Dylan Charles

Last year the world was shocked by the devastating fires which tore through the Amazon rainforest. People from all corners of the globe voiced their sadness and support on social media, celebrities came forth with pledges of support, and Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro become the public face of the ruin of the rainforest.

With all the concern over the situation, however, those who truly care about the rainforests of South America missed an important development in the multi-generational fight against the corporations most responsible for deforestation and oil drilling in the earth’s most biologically diverse natural ecosystems.

Steven Donziger has been fighting for indigenous land rights and social justice in South America for over 25 years, and is celebrated as the lawyer who stood up to and won a $9.5 billion dollar settlement against Chevron in 2011 for polluting Lago Agrio, Ecuador with cancer-causing chemicals, poisoning many indigenous groups in the region.

For more than two decades Steven Donziger has taken on one of the largest and most important fights for corporate accountability in history on behalf of indigenous and rainforest communities. His ability to stare down one of the most vicious corporate attacks in history is nothing short of astounding and serves as an inspiration to untold numbers of people around the world. ~Paul Paz y Miño, Associate Director, Amazon Watch

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Since then, Chevron has waged a long war of targeted harassment against Donziger, hiring private investigators and an army of lawyers and law firms to make his life a living hell and bankrupt his family. On August 6th, 2019, Donziger was placed on house arrest in his home in New York City, after a judge held him in contempt of court for refusing to turn over his personal computer and phone for review by Chevron lawyers.

I’m like a corporate political prisoner… They are trying to totally destroy me. ~Steven Donziger

Chevron’s extraordinary campaign against Donziger has resulted in him being disbarred, having his personal bank accounts frozen, lien against his personal residence, and outrageous fines against him. Chevron, on the other hand, with market capital in the hundreds of billions of dollars, has already beaten the $9.5 billion in fines, and is clearly using this case to make both a public example and a legal precedent for those who would dare attempt to hold corporations responsible for wanton environmental damage.

The Intercept recently wrote an in-depth explanation of Donziger’s persecution by Chevron, which is worth reading in its entirety, but of particular note is the significance this case will have on the future of environmental activism.

Donziger’s current prohibition from working, traveling, earning money, and leaving his home shows how successful Chevron’s strategy has been. But even as his fate hangs in the balance, Donziger’s case matters far beyond the life of this one lawyer.

“It should be nothing short of terrifying for any activist challenging corporate power and the oil industry in the U.S.,” said Paul Paz y Miño, associate director of Amazon Watch, an organization devoted to the protection of the rainforest and Indigenous people in the Amazon basin. “They’ve made it clear there’s no amount of money that’s too much to spend on this case,” he said of Chevron. “They will stop at nothing.”

The Chevron case may be most devastating for the plaintiffs in the Amazon, who never received their judgment despite being left with hundreds of unlined waste pits and contaminated water and soil from millions of gallons of spilled crude oil and billions of gallons of dumped toxic waste. Everything that’s happened to Donziger “is small potatoes compared to the fact that Kaplan has rendered the damage the company actually did as totally irrelevant,” said Nesson. [Source]

Donziger is organizing a desperate effort to raise funds for his legal defense, endorsed and supported by Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, and author of Economic Hitman, John Perkins, among many other prominent advocates of environmental and social justice.

As noted by Sophia Rokhlin, anthropologist and author of When Plants Dream: Ayahuasca, Amazonian Shamanism and the Global Psychedelic Renaissance:

Important cause here.

For years I’ve been following Steven Donziger’s amazing work defending communities impacted by the Chevron oil spill in the Ecuadorian Amazon. I’ve seen the impact of this spill with my own eyes. I have swum in the water. What happened there is known now as the Chernobyl of the Amazon rainforest. Hundreds of premature deaths, unknown thousands of cancer cases, children born with deformities…it’s brutal.

To top this all off is the darker story of Chevron’s intentional, cold and calculated efforts to set-up Donziger. Donziger has been under house arrest for 178 days and faces a grueling legal battle before him. Corporations cannot be allowed to imprison and intimidate environmental defenders like this. This has got to end.

Any little donation and spreading the word helps. Thanks friends. – Sophia

On his website in his own words, Donziger voices his plea for help in this urgent matter:

Friends, I Need Your Help.

I have spent much of my professional life helping Indigenous peoples and local communities in Ecuador win a historic $9.5 billion judgment against Chevron for the deliberate dumping of cancer-causing oil waste into the Amazon. As part of a vicious retaliation campaign, Chevron has attacked me for 10 years using hundreds of lawyers with the goal of blocking my advocacy and bankrupting my family.

Chevron recently orchestrated my criminal contempt prosecution after I challenged an unprecedented order from a federal judge that I turn over my computer and phone for review by Chevron lawyers. After the regular prosecutor in Manhattan (the SDNY) refused the case, the judge appointed a corporate law firm with deep ties to the oil and gas industry to prosecute me. This law firm had me put under indefinite house arrest on August 6 where I remain now, almost six months later. I might be the only person in pre-trial detention in the entire country on a misdemeanor charge. There is a costly battle ahead, the outcome of which is essential not just for me and my family but also for the larger global struggle for justice. To meet this challenge, I need financial support urgently. ~ Steven Donziger

With so much public concern over the environment today, for people who truly care about the Amazon rainforest and the health of the world’s natural ecosystems, this case couldn’t be more important. If this resonates with you, perhaps consider contributing to Steven Donziger’s defense, here.

13-Year-Old Food Freedom Activist On a Mission to Spread Seed Libraries Across the U.S.

By Jason Erickson

Alicia Serratos has been an activist since the age of 8 when she campaigned to get GMOs out of Girl Scout cookies, according to fellow activist and author Rob Greenfield seen in the video below.

Alicia hasn’t stopped since those early days of promoting food freedom; today at the age of 13 she has turned her attention toward seed libraries which aim to make seeds accessible to more people as well as educate about the importance of seed saving.

As regular readers might know, Big Ag and its corporate and government partners have been on their own mission to criminalize the act of sharing seeds, even going as far as to declare it a form of “Agri-Terrorism”  in violation of the Seed Act of 2004.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Nevertheless, Alicia is being recognized by sensible people everywhere as a hero for her work. She has appeared in the documentary The Need to Grow, as well as being invited to Rob Greenfield’s World Solutions Speaking Tour.

Alicia’s new project is called 3 Sisters Seed Box, which will be a self-contained seed library starter pack that she aims to place in each of the 50 states.

She details her mission at her blog where you can donate if you would like to Support her work HERE:

My goal is to send out 100 Seed Boxes, with at least one in each of the 50 United States. I am excited to get started, but can’t do it alone. It will take all of you to help me reach my goal. I will need help with donations of organic seeds, a total of 2,000 packs! I will also be accepting monetary donations to purchase all of the other items that will go in the Seed Boxes and to help cover the cost of shipping.

Each Seed Box will include:

A binder, complete with everything you need to know about Seed Libraries

20 packs of seeds (including one each of corn, squash and beans)

20 containers to house each seed variety

20 wooden seed label stakes for labeling newly planted seeds

1 pack of envelopes (to check out and return seeds)

1 pack of pens

1 box

Willie Nelson Joins the Fight Against a Corporate Takeover of the Cannabis Industry

By Phillip Schneider

As marijuana becomes legal across the country, a select few companies have come to dominate the market with some bad business practices. But Willie Nelson is trying to stop them.

Thirty-five years ago, as Willie was playing his music at Live Aid, a benefit concert for those affected by the famine in Ethiopia, he had the idea for a benefit concert that supports local farmers.

But Bob Geldof, the organizer of Live Aid at the time, thought that his proposal was a “crass, stupid, and nationalistic” conflation of the two issues. As Willie listened to him downplay the importance of farmers affected by a drought, bankruptcy, and a corporate takeover of the industry, it only solidified his desire to start his own concert, thus Farm Aid was born.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

In their first year, Farm Aid included artists such as Johnny Cash and B.B. King and raised over $9 million for down-and-out American farmers.

“We were losing like 300 farmers a week” to suicide, Nelson recalls. “[But] things are a little better now. People have started thinking about buying and growing sustainably.”

Since Farm Aid began, a paradigm shift has occurred. People are now talking about sustainable agriculture, permaculture, and organic food, and the likes of Big Tobacco, Big Agriculture, and Big Biotech have become stains on American identity.

Willie Nelson was as much a player in this cultural shift as anybody, but he knows that the battle isn’t over yet. In recent years, Willie has set his sights on something very near and dear to him: marijuana.

As a life-long marijuana smoker, Willie Nelson has a deep concern about the way that cannabis is grown and distributed. Out of this passion for weed came the start-up company Willie’s Reserve, a company started by Willie and investor Andrew Davison that seeks to bring social responsibility into the pot market.

I really believe in the environmental aspect of this. It’s a great way to revitalize small farms, and I want to make sure that any product we grow is as clean as we can make it and that, wherever possible, we’re trying to lower the environmental impact of our operations. – Andrew Davidson on Willie Nelson’s response to his proposal.

The CBD Health Revolution is online and FREE from January 13-19, 2020.

The legalization movement was founded on the values of justice, liberty, and health. Many people, often disproportionately black, have been thrown in jail for victimless crimes relating to cannabis. Although marijuana is now legal to smoke in many places, it is not always legal to grow or sell. In order to do so, you must get a medical permit, or a cannabis business license respectively, in which the government is handing out very few.

It looks a lot like the concentration of capital that we have seen with Big Alcohol and Big Tobacco. I think that’s problematic for cannabis-law reformers, because it plays into our opposition’s strongest argument. – Alison Holcomb, drafter of the original cannabis legalization law in Washington State

Big Pot has also begun using harmful pesticides, none of which cannabis activists and consumers ever desired to smoke. Prior to legalization, black market growers typically would not use any pesticides because the quantity of plants tended to be low.

But when you’re investing millions of dollars in a large cultivation center, you can bet they are not going to take the risk of their crop getting wiped out by mold or mildew or insects. – Keith Stroup, founder of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws

Oddly enough, there are no chemicals approved for use on the cannabis plant. This tends to mean, however, that companies are using whichever chemicals they want without much oversight. These chemicals include Avid, Floramite, myclobutanil, and imidacloprid, which professor of entomology at Colorado State University Whitney Cranshaw claims actually develops more mites on the plants.

To make matters worse, labels such as “clean” and “natural” have a striking resemblance to the Big Food term “all natural,” in that there are few regulatory requirements, resulting in meaningless labeling used solely to market products as less dangerous than they actually are.

Although Willie Nelson has recently announced his retirement as a weed smoker, he is still in charge of his company and is rumored to take edibles frequently. However, he has stated before that he “[doesn’t] like edibles that much.”

I had a bad experience the first time I did it. This was 50 years ago. I ate a bunch of cookies, and I lay there all night thinking the flesh was falling off my bones. – Willie Nelson

Willie’s Reserve empowers local farmers by allowing them the Willie Nelson branding in exchange for particular rules they must follow, such as restrictions on pesticide use and that they must be small companies. This ensures quality weed and empowers small businesses seeking to compete with the big names like Privateer Holdings and Diego Pellicer.

They [consumers] want to know where the product comes from, they want to know it’s clean and cared for, they want to know it was local grown and that it has a connection to their community. – Andrew Davidson

Willie has another enemy in the pot industry:  GMO Marijuana. In one of the biggest moves to consolidate power in the cannabis industry to date, Bayer and Monsanto are maneuvering to take over the cannabis industry with genetically modified strains, which you can only grow if you have a license from the company.

These problems could have been fixed on the first day, but you have a lot of bureaucracy and bullshit, a lot of big corporations. So that’s what we’re up against. They’re trying to monopolize it all. That’s horseshit. That ain’t right, and we’ll do everything we can to keep that from happening. – Willie Nelson

Farmer Sets Up Trough For Animals To Drink From While The Australian Bushfires Rage On

By Mayukh Saha

The Australian bushfires continue to devastate Australia for over a week now. And while ecologists believe that mitigation processes might help in afforestation, there is no way that the wildlife loss wouldn’t be a major shock to the entire country. This emu farmer has set up a drinking pool for animals. All the dams are quickly drying up, making it difficult for the wildlife to survive.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Most people are supporting the firefighters in their struggle to control the fire. But some are trying to help the animals that have been worst affected by the Australian bushfires. Steve Irwin’s family has been responsible for treating almost 90,000 animals that have been wounded over the last few months. Now, an Australian farmer couple has set up a drinking pool on their emu farm, where animals can come and quench their thirst. Henley’s emu farm is located in New South Wales and is operated by Penny and Phil Henley.

The duo has also installed a ramp that leads directly to the water supply. This ramp was for those animals that have tiny feet or are flightless. The situation is getting critical as around 480 million animals have perished in the Australian bushfires since September, as reported by the University of Sydney.

Prof. Chris Dickman mentions that New South Wales has lost around three million hectares in the last ten days itself. But he also states that while most large animals like kangaroos and emus would be able to get away from the fire, animals such as koalas and echidnas will not be able to.

Even animals like the echidna are coming to drink water from the pool. Echidnas are known to drink water only when they are extremely thirsty.

Dog Whispering Boy Won An ASPCA Award After Rescuing More Than 1,300 Dogs From High-Kill Shelters

By Mayukh Saha

Project Freedom Ride was started by seven-year-old Roman McConn and his mother Sully to help pooches in and around Texas. Roman has been tirelessly working to help senior and abandoned dogs get a second chance at life. As of 2018, this little wonder boy has saved more than 1,300 dogs from shelters. Most of them were on the euthanasia list but Roman found them new homes.

Roman McConn has been dedicated to this cause since he was only 4 years old. With the help of his mother, he has been interacting with shelter animals. He plays with them, gets to know about their personality and then this mother-son duo makes videos about each loving doggo. Roman is known as somewhat of a dog whisperer, with his ability to communicate and interact with the dogs in various shelters. These unique videos detailing the traits of the shelter animals are posted on Facebook to reach the maximum audience.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Project Freedom Ride is dedicated to connecting shelter animals in Georgia and Texas with loving families from the Pacific Northwest. Roman McConn spends enough time to get to know each dog individually and then the videos are made. He firmly believes that no dog should be left in shelters, everyone deserves a home. With the help of this Project, Roman has not only saved dogs but also nearly 50 cats.

Project Freedom Ride helps the rescues in Texas with funding, networking and other processes of adoption. In the end, the animals get a loving home, often after barely escaping euthanasia. And the families who adopt them are more than happy to welcome those 4 furry paws!

Roman McConn

Roman McConn’s mother explains how his face lights up every time he gets to know another of his friends has found a home. He loves to interact with the dogs before making the videos. Roman wants them to find families who would be most suitable for the personality of the dogs. And he wishes that other kids like him would try to dedicate their time to help such shelter animals as well.

American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) Kid of the Year is an honor given every year to a unique child who has made an impactful commitment to the welfare of animals. 2018 saw Roman McConn clinch the award for his unique efforts to rehome the shelter animals in his state. The 2019 award has been given to ten-year-old Brady Snakovsky for his efforts in raising funds to buy ballistic vests for K9 officers.

This Is How Lay’s $177 Billion Owner Tried To Sue Local Indian Farmers For Growing Their Patented Potatoes and Failed

By Mayukh Saha

In a twist in the classic David vs Goliath story, the Goliath has rallied against David here. We are talking about the potential lawsuit with which PepsiCo has threatened small-time farmers in a small village near Ahmedabad, Gujarat in India.

But why?

The multi-billion dollar industry has alleged that four farmers of this particular village have been growing a special variety of potatoes whose rights have been bought by the industry. This means that what they have been doing has been a classic case of infringement on one’s patented property. And while they have threatened the small farmers with a lawsuit containing reparations of almost $143,000 each, they have decided to first try to settle amicably.

The potatoes in question are FL-2027, a variety that PepsiCo has exclusive rights over, since 2016 as submitted in the district court, and verified by CNN.

A spokesperson for the company told that they were looking at a lawsuit only because they wanted to safeguard the rights of several thousand farmers who were under a contract with PepsiCo. This would ensure that their privileges and rights aren’t infringed.

Interestingly, PepsiCo is India’s largest potato buyer, and this particular potato has been used to make its uber-famous Lays. PepsiCo is also one of the first international companies in India that went for localization and employed several thousand farmers to grow a variety of these protected potatoes.

PepsiCo mentions how there were many farmers who were given the legal right to grow these potatoes, but not Fulchand Kachchawa and Suresh Kachchawa living near Deesa, north of Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

But as we would have it, the small farmers have found themselves being supported by a number of activists and lawyers. Around 190 activists have written to the Indian Ministry of Agriculture, stating how these claims were not only false but could also be an attack on the sovereignty of the nation itself. India Today, a big-time media company writes how the activists believe that these claims are untenable and go against the spirit of a true business transaction.

Now, unless the matter is taken to court or dealt with amicably, we wouldn’t know who is in the wrong.

But if the words of Kapil Shah, head of the law group Janta is to be believed, the behemoth has made a big mistake by accusing these farmers. It will go against their rights to practice free agriculture.

On the 2nd of May 2019 Pepsico announced that they have withdrawn the Indian potato farmer lawsuits after political pressure.

In the end it’s awesome to hear that justice finally prevailed.

World’s Leading Authority on Aluminum Toxicity Has GoFundMe To Study Aluminum In Vaccines Shut Down

By Arjun Walia

  • The Facts: Dr. Chris Exley is a Professor in Bioinorganic Chemistry and the world’s leading expert in aluminum toxicology. He was recently denied by scientific authorities the funding to study aluminum in vaccines. His GoFundMe campaign was also taken down.
  • Reflect On: Why don’t our federal health regulatory agencies conduct a study showing that it’s safe to inject aluminum into babies and adults?

Dr. Chris Exley is a Professor in Bioinorganic Chemistry at Keele University and an Honorary Professor at the UHI Millennium Institute. He is a biologist with a PhD in the ecotoxicology of aluminum, and his research from 1984 until present has focused on an intriguing paradox: “How come the third most abundant element of the Earth’s crust (aluminum) is non-essential and largely inimical to life?” He goes on to explain how investigating this mystery has “required research in myriad fields from the basic inorganic chemistry of the reaction of aluminium and silicon to the potentially complex biological availability of aluminium in humans.” He also explains in his bio how he is “fascinated by the element silicon in relation to living things which, as the second most abundant element of the Earth’s crust, is also almost devoid of biological function. One possible function of silicon is to keep aluminium out of biology (biota) and this forms a large part of the research in our group. We are also interested in biological silicification.” (source)

We now know that aluminum has no place in the human body. It doesn’t take a genius to know that aluminum, thanks to the work of Exley and many others, wreaks havoc on any biological system. It’s great stuff to make cars and airplanes out of, sure, but it clearly does not belong inside of the human body in any amount, as it’s extremely toxic and represents one of the most dangerous and neurotoxic substances known to man. Here’s a great little video from Dr. Christopher Shaw from UBC in Canada explaining that.

You can view a list of Exley’s publications HERE.

Exley recently started a GoFundMe to raise money to study aluminum in vaccines. Despite the fact that aluminum has been added into vaccines as the adjuvant to provoke an immune response, it’s never been evaluated for safety. You would think that our federal health regulatory agencies would conduct appropriate safety studies for all vaccine ingredients, but this isn’t the case, yet vaccines are marketed as completely safe for everybody.

His campaign was started after his appeal to scientific authorities for funding was rejected. Why would a study to evaluate aluminum in vaccines and the effect it has on the human body and little infants be shut down? Would a study like this not be in the best interests of humanity and human health? Why is science being shut down? Don’t we want to discover more?

Virtually every study that comes out claiming that vaccines are safe does not take into account human exposure to several vaccine ingredients and their bioaccumulation, meaning where they end up in the body and what they are doing. Conducting studies could put this issue to rest, and the hypothesis that must be tested is quite simple: ‘No aluminium in an infant’s brain results in no autism.’

The British academic was recently blocked from raising funds, apparently after “protests by other scientists.” (source)  Robert F Kennedy Jr. made a great post regarding the recent blockage on his social media platforms, which is how I first became aware of it.

“He who stifles free discussion secretly doubts what he professes to believe in is really true.” — Wendel Phillips. GoFundMe today shut down Dr. Christopher Exley’s crowd funding campaign to study aluminum in vaccines. Dr. Exley, the world’s leading authority on aluminum toxicity angered the Pharma Cartel when his autopsies discovered astronomically high aluminum concentrations in the brains of children with autism. His other studies link aluminum in Merck’s Gardasil and other vaccines to dementia, Alzheimer’s and autism. Exley joins a long list of scientists silenced for questioning the Vaccine Orthodoxy. While White House Republicans censor climate science at the EPA, congressional Democrats clamor for censorship of vaccine science. It’s strange, to me, that these politicians don’t understand that censorship is incompatible with democracy. Given purchase, censorship will spread virally until it infects and kills democracy. SCOTUS Justice Potter Stewart called censorship “the hallmark of an authoritarian regime.” Heinrich Heine’s observed, “Where they have burned books, they will, in the end, burn human beings.” (source)

Why It’s Quite Clear Exley’s Research is Much Needed

A study published in 2011 makes the issue quite clear:

Aluminum is an experimentally demonstrated neurotoxin and the most commonly used vaccine adjuvant. Despite almost 90 years of widespread use of aluminum adjuvants, medical science’s understanding about their mechanisms of action is still remarkably poor. There is also a concerning scarcity of data on toxicology and pharmacokinetics of these compounds. In spite of this, the notion that aluminum in vaccines is safe appears to be widely accepted. Experimental research, however, clearly shows that aluminum adjuvants have a potential to induce serious immunological disorders in humans. (source)

The key takeaway there is “medical science’s understanding about their mechanisms of action is still remarkably poor.”

After this study, more research came out to help us better understand what happens when aluminum is injected into the body. It has been found that injected aluminum does not exit the body; in fact, it stays in the body and travels to various organs in the brain, where it remains. This isn’t surprising since it’s the adjuvant, it’s designed to stay there or else the vaccine doesn’t work.

As the groundbreaking study in 2015 emphasized:

Evidence that aluminum-coated particles phagocytozed in the injected muscle and its draining lymph notes can disseminate within phagocytes throughout the body and slowly accumulate in the brain further suggests that alum safety should be evaluated in the long term.

Furthermore, in 2018, a paper published in the Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry found that almost 100 percent of the intramuscularly injected aluminum in mice as vaccine adjuvants was absorbed into the systemic circulation and traveled to different sites in the body such as the brain, the joints, and the spleen, where it accumulated and was retained for years post-vaccination. (source)

Exley has been interviewed multiple times about this subject, and all of these studies and his research point to the same findings: Aluminum in vaccines does not exit the body, and it has been linked to multiple diseases, which can develop immediately post-injection or up to decades later in life for certain neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

A study by Exley and his team published in 2018 should have made headlines everywhere, as it discovered historically high amounts of aluminum in autistic brains. The study was conducted by some of the world’s leading scientists in the field. Five people were used in the study, four males and one female, all between the ages of 14 and 50. Each of their brains contained unsafe and high amounts of aluminum compared to patients with other diseases where high brain aluminum content is common like Alzheimer’s disease.

As you can see, there is more than enough evidence that clearly warrants further investigation into aluminum in vaccines. Why are these efforts constantly getting shut down? Why is there no funding? Why don’t our federal health regulatory agencies study aluminum in vaccines if it’s ‘completely safe’? Why not just do the study and debunk those who say it’s not? What’s going on here?

You can listen to long and detailed information shared by Exley the interview below, posted by Keele University, conducted by Del Bigtree.

CETV

CE Founder Joe Martino & myself  recently sat down for an episode on CETV, a platform we created to combat internet censorship and help us stay alive and able to put out the information that we do. We discussed the MMR vaccine specifically with regards to all of the mandatory vaccination initiatives that are happening right now.

[embedded content]

The Takeaway

Why are further efforts to study aluminum being blocked? Regardless of the hurdles these scientists are going through and the resistance they face, in a real scientific community, studies on this would be welcomed. That being said, there is more than enough information on aluminum in vaccines to justify not vaccinating yourself and your child with aluminum-containing vaccines.

Arjun Walia – I joined the CE team in 2010 shortly after finishing university and have been grateful for the fact that I have been able to do this ever since 🙂 There are many things happening on the planet that don’t resonate with me, and I wanted to do what I could to play a role in creating change. It’s been great making changes in my own life and creating awareness and I look forward to more projects that move beyond awareness and into action and implementation. So stay tuned 🙂 [email protected]

After The Largest Beach Clean Up In History Baby Turtles Returned To The Beaches Of Mumbai

By Mayukh Saha

The Versova Beach in Mumbai was once a garbage dump. But it has undergone the world’s largest beach clean-up process and it was a massive success. No, not just by sight. The Versova beach was once home to Olive Ridley turtles. As soon as the clean-up process was over, to the delight of conservationists, roughly 80 baby turtles were spotted, trying to go across the Versova beach. An activist from Mumbai, Afroz Shah, had his eyes fill up with tears when he saw these babies walk in the direction of the ocean.

It must have been after a couple of decades that these turtles were spotted here. The beach was an important point of rest for these turtles when they migrated to the Arabian sea. Now, watching these turtles come back makes the entire clean-up process worth it. Shah started the drive back in October 2015. And it took about two whole years for the volunteers to clear this beach and to remove the heaps of trash present on the beach. It was almost five feet high and had clogged the beach in such a way that it barred the access point of the turtles. But now, the beach is clean and the turtles are free to roll in the sand as they used to do decades earlier.

Shah had been the person who gathered the volunteers and organized the clean-up process. They educated the locals to not use the beach like a landfill and cleaned up the river systems too. Shah also took the effort to clean up about 52 restrooms around the area and planted about 50 coconut trees along the beach. The entire clean-up process took about two years and they had collected 11 million pounds of garbage in the process. The entire team is also planning to plant mangrove trees which will help counter the excess flooding in the area and also improve the water quality.

In December 2016, the United Nations awarded Shah with the Champion of the Earth Award due to his clean-up efforts and the wonderful outcome of the return of Oliver Ridley turtles to Mumbai. The project was named ‘World’s largest beach clean-up effort’ back in July 2016.

Shah is an inspiration and we should follow his example to make changes in our environment too. We need to make it habitable for us and for the animals that share this planet with us.

Iowa Town Bans Fluoride And Ends Program As Chemical’s Danger Becomes Apparent

By Aaron Kesel

A small town in northwestern Iowa called Ida Grove has voted to end treating its city’s drinking water with fluoride.

The Ida Grove City Council voted to halt fluoride treatment in the city’s water supply, the Sioux City Journal reported. The move comes after city leaders and residents challenged whether the fluoride was effective at preventing tooth decay or presented health risks

A recent survey distributed through utility bills found that most citizens of the 2,000 population city didn’t support fluoridation, according to the clerk’s office.

Fluoridating water has long been debated across the country, and some opponents have argued that its health effects aren’t completely understood.

There are three types of fluoride used to “fluoridate” water supplies: Fluorosilicic acid, sodium fluorosilicate, and sodium fluoride.

Fluorosilicic acid is the type most often used for cost reasons, and it is derived from phosphate fertilizers according to the CDC’s website.

The other two are created by adding either table salt or caustic soda to the mix.

Although if you bring up the topic of fluoride you are heavily ridiculed, the cited scientific research in this article will make you think twice. That maybe, just maybe a chemical does cause damage to the human body in numerous ways and is linked to several disorders affecting teeth, bones, the brain, and the thyroid gland, as well as lowering IQ.

To this writer’s knowledge, everything started in 1995 when Dr. Phyllis Mullenix Ph.D., a highly respected pharmacologist and toxicologist, found that rats who had fluoride added to their diet exhibited abnormal behavioral traits in a published study.

In 2005, a study conducted at the Harvard School of Dental Health found that fluoride in tap water directly contributed to causing bone cancer in young boys.

“New American research suggests that boys exposed to fluoride between the ages of five and 10 will suffer an increased rate of osteosarcoma – bone cancer – between the ages of 10 and 19,” according to a London Observer article about the study.

Based on the findings of the study, the respected Environmental Working Group — a non-profit research organization environmental watchdog — lobbied to have fluoride in tap water be added to the U.S. government’s classified list of substances known or anticipated to cause cancer.

After reviewing fluoride toxicological data, the NRC reported in 2006, “It’s apparent that fluorides have the ability to interfere with the functions of the brain.”

In another article by Scientific American, a study “Concluded that fluoride can subtly alter endocrine function, especially in the thyroid — the gland that produces hormones regulating growth and metabolism.”

The report also notes that “a series of epidemiological studies in China have associated high fluoride exposures with lower IQ.”

“Epidemiological studies and tests on lab animals suggest that high fluoride exposure increases the risk of bone fracture, especially in vulnerable populations such as the elderly and diabetics,” writes Dan Fagin.

Fagin interviewed Steven Levy, director of the Iowa Fluoride Study which tracked about 700 Iowa children for sixteen years. Nine-year-old “Iowa children who lived in communities where the water was fluoridated were 50 percent more likely to have mild fluorosis… than [nine-year-old] children living in nonfluoridated areas of the state,” writes Fagin.

In 2012, years later, a Reuters headline read: “Harvard Study Finds Fluoride Lowers IQ – Published in Federal Gov’t Journal.”

Then the U.S. government finally admitted in 2015 that they’ve overdosed Americans on fluoride and, for the first time since 1962, lowered its recommended level of fluoride in drinking water, Mercola reported.

Even the Chinese have found that fluoride in drinking water causes damage to children’s livers and kidneys, according to an August 2006 Chinese study.

So is the anti-fluoride conspiracy global? Or maybe there is really something there to suggest that chemical waste is dangerous … go figure.

Interestingly enough, when digging I found a case in town where they found out the hard way that fluoride added to their water supply began corroding pipes and even damaging city vehicles.

In 2014, a report from the world’s oldest and most prestigious medical journal, The Lancet, officially classified fluoride as a neurotoxin — in the same category as arsenic, lead, and mercury.

Further, the EPA published a now-deleted document stating that fluoride is a chemical “with substantial evidence of developmental neurotoxicity.”

A study, published in the journal Environmental Health in 2015, found that states with a higher portion of artificially fluoridated water had a higher prevalence of ADHD. This relationship held up across six different years examined. The authors, psychologists Christine Till and Ashley Malin at Toronto’s York University, looked at the prevalence of fluoridation by state in 1992 and rates of ADHD diagnoses in subsequent years.

“States in which a greater proportion of people received artificially-fluoridated water in 1992 tended to have a greater proportion of children and adolescents who received ADHD diagnoses [in later years], after controlling for socioeconomic status,” Malin says. Wealth is important to take into account because the poor are more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD, she says. After income was adjusted for, though, the link held up.”

Another study in 2015 from the University of Kent suggests that fluoride in drinking water may trigger depression and weight gain by causing thyroid problems, Telegraph.co.uk reported.

Fluoride isn’t the only chemical to worry about in our water; in 2017, the Environmental Working Group, released a searchable database that shows almost 50,000 public water systems in the U.S. that are contaminated with dozens of harmful chemicals.

Some of the chemicals found in your drinking water include – arsenic, hexavalent chromium, radiation, chloroform, perfluorooctanoic acid, Bromodichloromethane, Dichloroacetic acid, Barium, and Uranium; and that’s just scratching the surface of the 250-plus contaminants the group discovered.

In 2016, the EWG found that two-thirds of Americans’ water is contaminated with the carcinogen that Erin Brockovich exposed – chemical chromium 6 or hexavalent chromium – affecting the tap water of more than 218 million Americans.

A 2008 study by the National Toxicology Program found that chromium-6 in drinking water caused cancer in rats and mice that were exposed to the chemical.

It’s been 20 years since the EPA last passed any new drinking water regulations. Regardless, it’s clear that municipalities have not been following the guidelines anyway.

If you’re in the U.S. you can check your own water supply by visiting the Tap Water Database, which allows anyone in the U.S. to enter their zip code or local utility’s name and find out what’s lurking in their local water supply.

Today, nearly 75% of the U.S. gets fluoridated water from the community system. However, in the past five years, 74 cities have voted to remove fluoride from their drinking water, according to NBC. So the tides are turning against the elitists pushing for using an essentially slow-kill poison on the public. See FluorideAlert.org for an up-to-date list of countries and cities that have opposed adding fluoride to their water supply.

The first appearance of fluoridated drinking water was found in Germany’s Nazi prison camps. The Nazis had no concern at all about fluoride’s supposed effect on children’s teeth; their alleged reason for mass-medicating water with sodium fluoride was to sterilize humans and force people in their concentration camps into calm submission by dumbing them down. (Ref. book: The Crime and Punishment of I.G. Farben by Joseph Borkin.)

On the other side of the battlefield, in the U.S. fluoride was being tested in the Manhattan Project. According to declassified government documents summarized by Project Censored, Manhattan Project scientists discovered early on that fluoride was a “leading health hazard to bomb program workers and surrounding communities.” Now, fluoride is a chemical used in our water to keep our teeth healthy.

Does anyone else not see a problem with all of the evidence above? I’ll leave you with the song, “Water Crimes” by New Zealand rapper Trillian and a question.
