9-Year-Old Girl Grows Food And Builds Shelters For The Homeless

By Mayukh Saha

What would you expect of a young girl of six? You’d think she’s just going to have fun and dream big -not Hailey Ford. While shopping for groceries with her mother back in 2012, the young Hailey met a homeless man, Edward. She asked her mother to buy him a sandwich and Edward was overwhelmed. He had not eaten anything in days and was weary from walking the streets. Young Hailey later met the Veteran Billy Ray who lost his leg fighting in the war and wanted to help him too. Hailey’s mother explained that it was not possible for them to help everybody as they did not have enough money.

This morning I went to the Outdoor Meal Site in Seattle. I handed out 28 coats. With the coats I handed out hygiene…

These incidents sparked an idea in the little girl’s head. She knew that if she couldn’t buy food for everyone, she sure could grow some in her small garden. She wanted to help homeless people and nothing would stand in her way. Naturally, young Hailey did not have any experience in farming but she wished to grow vegetables in her yard. She stayed up and studied books on farming and grew the first batch of vegetables in a couple of months’ time. Soybeans, carrots, and potatoes – she grew these herself and gave it to Billy Ray.

This is Edward and he will be getting the mobile sleeping shelter when it is completed. Today when we talked he told me…

Throwback Thursday-

This was my first donation I made. It was half a sandwich bag of carrots, beans, and peas. I was 6 years old.

Hailey did not stop there, she wanted to grow more food and help more homeless people. Slowly her neighbors joined hands and together they could harvest more vegetables.

This is Billy Ray. I have known him for three years. He was the first person I donated food to from my garden. He is a…

Hailey made sure that the vegetables were washed and packed. She then distributed it among the people living on the streets. Her efforts paid off and these people became her friends. You’d think she would continue to grow more food but the young girl had bigger plans. She knew that these homeless people need a roof over their heads and expressed her worry to her mother.

I got impatient and did the floor tonight.

Posted by Hailey’s Harvest on Sunday, August 2, 2015

What sounded completely impossible to her mother was soon achieved by Hailey. She started building cabins for the homeless. Lowe, the local store, gave her the necessary materials at half the price and her family helped her by recycling wood.

I started putting together the frame for the floor today. By tomorrow I hope to have the pallets up for the walls. The containers behind me are my carrots. I planted 6 dozen carrots today.

Posted by Hailey’s Harvest on Friday, April 17, 2015

Getting the shelter onto the trailer was really hard. Thankfully we had a ton of volunteers. Well, not a ton. There were 23 people that came to help- 20 of them were strangers before today.

Posted by Hailey’s Harvest on Saturday, September 12, 2015

Their collective effort paid off and soon they built cabins for homeless people. They even installed heaters for the comfort of the people who’d stay there. Hailey wants to make more such cabins and is excited to know that the whole neighborhood supports her noble endeavor.

Thank you, Miss Katie, for the feminine hygiene products. I will make sure they go to someone who needs them. Lots of women here need them since they aren’t handed out in a lot of places.

Posted by Hailey’s Harvest on Tuesday, January 27, 2015

The young girl received help from Katie in the form of feminine supplies and another donation worth $3,000, with which she bought items of basic care for the people during Christmas.

Thanks to all the donations, as of today, Hailey’s Harvest has gotten new, warm coats on 51 kids in my community.

Hailey is hailed as Santa Claus among the children and we totally agree. She is an inspiration for everyone!

The Way This 73-Year-Old Woman Transformed Her Body Is Inspirational

By Mayukh Saha

When one door closes, several others open up. Joan MacDonald, a septuagenarian from Ontario knows all about it. She believes that age is no impediment to how you live your life. Just because you are old doesn’t mean that you have to give up on life – or simply waste away during the years left. After her general physician mentioned prescription drugs for her old age, she decided that it was time for her to make big changes. This is when she got into the fitness industry.

Here is my first 10 months of transformation, and two more recent photos, just to share with you the reality of this long, slow process that I’m still on..😅😅 The year I started was 2017. The first number is the date. Second number is my weight. Third number is my waist. Fourth number is my hips at the widest. 😅 Last number is my upper right thigh at the widest. . 🙏 That first crucial year was full of all kinds of challenges and heartbreak, but somehow I kept plugging along. I lost my mom who I still miss very, very much. I had to learn to be content with each step forward, and with each stage of my transformation. I had to really fall in love with my habits and learn to take pride in my meal planning and food prep (I’m still working on that one, trust me!). I’m sharing this with you so that those of you starting out will see what a big transformation actually looks like over the months. I get to enjoy great health and a size small body now because the woman in the photos worked her booty off to change her ways. New Research Suggests Pesticides Damages The Brains Of Baby Bees

By Mayukh Saha

The bee population has seen a decrease of over 30% in the last hundred years in America and Europe. Declining habitat and climate change are among the top reasons for this decline, along with harmful pesticides. This Tuesday, scientists from the Imperial College, London, published a study that showed how baby bees are affected by harmful pesticides. Their brains were scanned and their learning abilities were tested in the test.

The research found that baby bees absorbed the contaminated food brought by working bees into their colony, and this went on to make them poorer at performing tasks in their later years. One of the authors of the study, Dr. Richard Gill, compared this damage to that suffered by a fetus when harmful substances are present in a womb.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

This senior lecturer at the Department of Life Sciences at the Imperial College further explained how bee colonies work like superorganisms. This means when something toxic enters a colony, the baby bees present inside will be affected by it. The most worrying part, according to Dr. Gill, is that when the baby bees feed on the toxic food, their brains experience stunted growth. When they are older, their brains become smaller and also functionally impaired. Unfortunately, it has been observed that this change is irreversible and permanent.

For the experiment, the researchers used neonicotinoids, a type of pesticide, to spike nectar. This was given to a lab-based bee colony. When the baby bees feeding on this spiked nectar became adults, their learning abilities were tested. The results were then compared with those obtained from bees that came from colonies where the nectar in the wildflowers had not been spiked and also from colonies where bees fed on pesticides only when they turned adults.

The ones who fed on pesticides while in their larvae stage exhibited significant learning disabilities as compared to the ones not feeding on pesticides. In order to test the finding, the researchers then tested the bees to see if they could associate particular smells with food rewards and scored them out of 10 for each successful attempt.

Dylan Smith, another researcher from Dr. Gill’s department at ICL, said that they have found evidence of how pesticides tend to become more concentrated with time inside bee colonies. The research was aimed at understanding how it affects baby bees in the long run, thereby ruining their prospects. Dr. Gill said that their impaired learning ability will make it very difficult for worker bees to forage in the wild which could turn catastrophic for the whole colony.

Around 100 baby bees who were involved in the study had their brains scanned. Micro-CT scanning technology was used and it showed that the ones exposed to harmful pesticides had less developed brains. To be precise, the portion known as the mushroom body was smaller in these bees.

The mushroom body is believed to be the one controlling the learning ability in all insects. A smaller mushroom body is associated with impaired learning ability which affects their performance. This further supports the idea that pesticides are the real culprit behind many bees’ poor performance in colonies.

Dr. Gill further said that their research shows that the role pesticides play in the declining number of bumble bees and other natural pollinators might have been underestimated. The researchers are working continuously to find how not just pesticides but habitat loss and climate change also affect the numbers and how they interact. Dr. Gill explains that these pesticides are affecting the baby bees who then have to go out and fight against extreme weather and habitat loss.

You can learn more about this research here.

Taking Daytime Naps Could Reduce Stress And Increase Your Health

By Mayukh Saha

Are you one of the hundreds who binge-watch shows or work till late at night? Do you dose off in class or feel disoriented in a meeting? Well, research by the American Sleep Association has proved that more than 35% of American adults get less than 7 hours of sleep at night and around 50-70% have a sleeping disorder. You need to nap more often.

Sleeping is important for your mind and body to function properly. If you are consistently sleeping less than 7 to 9 hours at night then you might severe consequences. Prolonged lack of sleep can affect the nervous system and your metabolism rate. It can also lead to chronic systemic inflammation which is associated with diabetes, arthritis, gastric troubles, depression, anxiety, and a lot of other problems. Your ability to process information, perform, and remember things can also get affected due to chronic sleep deprivation.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

What is the possible solution for this problem? All of us are leading fast-paced lives without having time to sit and relax. let alone sleep. Remember the good old childhood days when you could take blissful naps in the afternoon? As much as you hated it back then, it was beneficial for your health. Experts are suggesting that it is important to catch up on sleep during the day if you want to stay healthy.

What did Sir Winston Churchill and Albert Einstein have in common? Their routine of taking small naps. If you aren’t able to sleep for 7 to 9 hours at night, then you can snooze for 60-90 minutes during the day. The nap will have the same effect on your brain. A study conducted by Harvard University proved that naps increase one’s ability to learn more and remember things.

Naps are also good for your heart. According to a study published in the BMJ Journal, people who took only two naps a week had a lower chance of any cardiovascular diseases compared to those who did not nap at all. Dr. Kristine Yaffe, and Yue Leng, Ph.D., of the University of California, added that the frequency of the naps is as important as the duration.

Bill Anthony, director of the Harvard University Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center comments that taking regular naps can reduce the production of the hormone responsible for stress, cortisol. Lack of sleep affects your nervous system; and small triggers like being stuck in a traffic jam can lead to an anxiety attack.

Instead of drinking cups of coffee, try napping more if you want to stay alert. However, experts believe that a 20- to 30-minute nap is sufficient, and more than that may hamper your sleeping pattern. Find a cozy and dimly lit place to nap and do it in the early afternoon. Get rid of your mobile phone or any other thing that can disrupt your nap time.

Do not jolt yourself out of the nap. Give yourself some time to get back to your work, otherwise you will end up feeling more irritated. Take it slow and you will see your attention span has increased.

Nap more to do more!

Sydney School Ditches “Distracting” iPads Reverts Back To Paper Textbooks

By Mayukh Saha

Sydney’s Reddam House Private school has done away with iPads and brought in old school textbooks, in order to go back to the golden days when books and copies were the norm. It’s a step away from their previous policy wherein they asked students to get their own devices on which they were comfortable. In fact, iPads were their go-to textbooks for the last few years. Until now.

The school administration has decided to do away with iPads and other such devices because they believe that the main purpose isn’t being served. The technological advancement and development which they thought children would acquire through iPads never saw the light of day. But there have been some concerns raised by parents who believe that e-books are the future, and children would do better with iPads at their behest.

Ironically, the entire decision was taken up by students themselves, who felt that their needs were better served using pages, rather than a digital interface. But this change is in stark contrast to the ongoing technological change that is taking place in most schools around the globe where students and staff are doing away with books to get their hands on iPads.

What does science have to say about this entire situation?

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Well, there have been multiple studies that show the pros and cons of digital education – one of them posited in Canada. According to this study, around 6000 students use iPads to study daily. And these devices have both pros and cons – pros being the efficiency with which they can gather knowledge and information, and cons being the inability to type for long stretches of time.

There have been quite diversified studies regarding this trope, wherein a study showed that while the use of iPads helped students with special needs by granting them some form of independence, the cons involved not really helping them with mathematical problems.

While there have been several studies afloat, most of them remain inconclusive about where iPads stand when education is the main point of contention. Some experts are of the notion that the full spectrum of iPads hasn’t been utilized for the benefit of the students, and the teachers themselves. They believe that there is a lot more to be explored with the technology that they have in hand.

One reason why some are rallying for plain books is that modern technology requires a lot of upgrades. Upgrades that might already affect the flagging budget in many education systems. Also, with devices like iPads comes the notion of surveillance. Administrators have to be very careful about what they are allowing and what they aren’t. Access to the internet, too, has to be regulated.

When it comes to a student’s ability to comprehend texts, there are a few studies which talk about how reading books rather than PDFs help students more. But there are also studies which show that not enough research has been done in this field to reach a conclusion.

There are major cons to using iPads. One of them involves the blue light generated by the device. It can cause retina problems. Also, the presence of an iPad can seriously hamper the time a child would be involved in the playground. This can further lead to issues like obesity, and chronic depression, along with insomnia.

So, while iPads have their own way of making things easy for everyone, their recent introduction in the technological field may mean that a bit more research is required before one can outright say that iPads would make for good educational devices.

This Teenager Invented A Device That Generates Clean Energy And Purifies Water

By Mayukh Saha

Google Science Fairs are known around the world for providing a platform for innovation that change lives and affect things that matter. In 2015, 17-year-old Cynthia Sin Nga Lam was one of the top 15 finalists for her H2Pro prototype. It was a portable device that could purify water and at the same time generate electricity.

In 2019, her idea was taken up and furthered by a group of scientists from King Abdullah University, Thuwal, Saudi Arabia. They took up her project and enhanced it. The development of this device is published in Nature Communications.

Science News reported the mechanisms of this device. It was made functional by adding a water distillation system to the solar panel models. While the solar panel is generating electricity, heat from the panel is used to evaporate the water in the distillation system. The evaporated water, free from all contamination is allowed to condense and gather in a separate container.

According to a survey by The Water Project, one out of nine individuals of this world does not have access to clean drinking water. That is about 800 million people globally. Water hygiene issues are the reason for the high mortality rate among children – one out of five children are susceptible to it. On top of it, 80 percent of the health issues in the world are water-related.

These statistics inspired Lam to work on a device that could generate electricity, and at the same time purify water. The best part about this device is that it depends on solar energy – which is an inexhaustible source.

Credit: Wenbin Wang

Lam, who currently works at the World Health Organisation as a contract consultant, said that she wanted to create a device that did not work on electricity but on sunlight, in order to save energy. She also wanted her model to be cheap and easily accessible to the developing countries. She was really happy with her creation because it was so simple. It only needed titanium and a solar panel.

As Lam is no longer involved in the development of H2Pro, she is just happy that it is on the path of obtaining a form that would enable it to  reach the greater population. She hopes that it would be produced in a large scale and that every family would be able to access it.

This device not only separates pollutants from the water but also can be modified to have the capacity to separate hydrogen and oxygen too. According to a report by Fast Company, with just a switch we would have clean access to hydrogen compounds as well.

With amazing inventions coming out every day, it is a relief that the new generations are working conscientiously with the environment and not against it.

Hand Dryers Are A Bacterial Horror

By Mayukh Saha

Six years back, a group of researchers from Leeds University had announced that the hand dryers found in public washroom weren’t sanitary at all. This was major news to the public, since one of the reasons why hand dryers were installed was because they were supposed to be more sanitary.

What these air dryers do is simply populate the entire atmosphere around you with the germs that they blow from your hands. So, while they might be cleaning your hands, they aren’t really letting others clean their hands.

Based on several lab experiments, it was found that a hand dryer brought forth 27 times more bacteria than a normal paper towel. Also, the germs stayed for a long period of time in the air; but that was a mere hypothesis. Professor Wilcox came back with his colleagues to find real-world examples in 2018; they chose hospital bathrooms – a setting that needed to be clean for the health and welfare of everyone. Ironically, it was found that hospital bathrooms usually contain more bacteria than any other location, according to the Journal of Hospital Infection.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

The investigation required the services of three cities – Paris, Leeds, and Udine. The time set was for 12 weeks, within which two hospitals per city were selected. These hospital bathrooms were used by the workers in the hospital, so it would be able to provide correct information. What the researchers did was set up paper towels in one of the hospitals while using hand dryers in the other. They had decided to record the observation every 4 weeks, after which the method of drying would be reversed. At the end of 8 weeks, the process would go back to the order set in the first week to get a final reading.

Image: Best, E. et al/Journal of Hospital Infection, 2018

The swabs collected from these bathrooms were then set up for culture in the labs. As they had previously proved, hospitals with hand dryers dished out bacteria a lot more. In Udine, for example, bacteria was 100 times more where hand dryers were placed, than in places with paper towels. In Leeds, it was 27 times more, and in Paris, 33 times more.

In the restrooms at Leeds and other places in the UK, the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was found thrice more in the usage of hand dryers. Species of bacteria that were resistant to most penicillin were in abundance in public restrooms, especially bacteria that were very hard to diagnose and treat.

In the French and Italian hospitals, there was a definite presence of bacteria that could be drug-resistant. After the experiment, Professor Wilcox’s team wrote a statement which stated that hand dryers weren’t suitable in a clinical setting for they had bacteria in them that could prove fatal to people. Also, most of the NHS’s policies on Infection control need to be upgraded.

This research has led to the restriction in its use in most public hospitals in France. It is to be noted that hand dryers are still used in public restrooms in both countries and the US.

Wilcox mentions how the main problem is that people don’t really wash their hands properly. This results in the aerosol from the hand dryers blowing the germs from the hands onto nearby surfaces. These germs contaminate sinks, basins, and other such surfaces. He further states that if people substituted its use with paper towels, contamination can be brought down to the barest of minimums.

This Tortoise Received The World’s First 3D Printed Shell After Losing Its Shell In Fire

By Mayukh Saha

As the story of the injured tortoise Freddy came out, researchers all over the world used that as an incentive to start looking at more varied ways of caring for wounded animals.

As we have already learned in school, a shell is the most iconic and important part of a tortoise’s body. This shell, consisting of a carapace and a plastron is important in their survival against predators and the ravages of the environment.

The tortoise in question was saved from a horrific bushfire by Dr. Rodrigo Rabello– nicknamed Thor. While the tortoise was thankfully alive, her shell had been totally destroyed by the fire.

Her survival through the catastrophic fire had made her pneumonic, hunger ridden for close to 45 days, and she had also suffered through an 80% loss of her shell. Post rescue, she was named Freddy after the figure in the Nightmare of Elm Street who had a similar experience with fire.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Image: Caters

Now, a tortoise without a shell was doomed to a hard life filled with suffering and possible death on her head. But the Animal Avengers, a volunteering group consisting of Dr. Rabello and five other members decided to not give up and try every possible method to save this injured tortoise from certain death. These volunteers hailed from Brazil, and had come armed with a few vets, a surgeon of dentistry and a 3D designer.

This team had a reputation for constructing 3D body parts for animals and birds who had lost body parts in accidents. Usually, they built beaks for toucans and other such birds.

Image: Caters

Soon, realization struck them that they could use their gifts for good, and actually start constructing more complicated anatomical parts for animals that had lost them in freak incidents. The state-of-the-art technology at their disposal would certainly help with that. The prosthetics they provide would actually expand the field of animal care.

To help the injured tortoise, they decided to first study several examples of shells before going to town with Freddy’s. Then as they settled on the final design, they decided on using a plastic that was derived from corn. They would also make sure that the shell would be printed in pieces so that they could be set up later.

injured tortoise recovered

Image: G.C. Noticias

Cicero Moraes, the printer in the group – nicknamed ‘Hulk’ – decided to work with a 3D-printed shell that would be Hulk-esque (‘smashproof’). To go through with that, he had to first click a lot of pictures of Freddy, which he then compared to pictures of tortoises that were healthy. Finally, he settled on a design and started working with that.

The ‘Vision’ in the group, Dr. Paulo Miamoto, brought out a 3D desktop printer with which he printed out the shell in 4 large pieces. These pieces were supposed to snap over Freddy, instead of one large piece that could potentially succumb to miscalculations. The individual pieces took a long amount of time to print – close to 50 hours each.

Next Robert Ferocchio – the Ironman and a surgeon by profession – helped integrate the shell along with the existing shell so that Freddy would finally be saved from a torturous death. Before they finally pulled all stops on this project, they decided to paint Freddy’s shell so that it didn’t remain bland and artificial. But prior to contacting Yuri Caldera, a Brazilian painter, they made sure that the paint wouldn’t harm Freddy or her shell.

They soon received the green signal to paint her shell. As of today, Freddy is extremely mobile following her ordeal and lives with Dr. Rabello – the Thor of the group.

This injured tortoise really found her Avengers, who helped her out at a combined cost of $136.

This Technique Transforms Nuclear Waste Into “Diamond Batteries”

By Mayukh Saha

As the new decade begins, scientists have been frantically trying to construct batteries made of diamond. The batteries would have the recycled energy of nuclear waste. These batteries would work for at least an entire millennium.

Researchers at Bristol University have already designed diamond batteries that obtain their power from materials that are radioactive in nature. These batteries have already been tested. Now the researchers are shifting their attention towards seeking power from nuclear waste by recycling them.

One such area where the amount of nuclear waste is high is the Berkeley Power Station at Gloucestershire. This power plant was decommissioned back in 1989 but has recently been deemed safe for the extraction of waste.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

The process involves extracting the isotopes of Carbon-14 from blocks of graphite. These would then be molded within diamonds that are wafer-thin. This, according to scientists, would provide unlimited power for a millennium. The applications would be hugely diverse – from hearing aids to spacecraft – the possibilities are endless.

These batteries made of diamond have already been tested by researchers in volatile environments – especially in areas where conventional power sources are hard to replace. According to James Barker, a full-fledged battery at this stage would be able to charge a cellphone.

While the uses are far and many, it should be primarily used by technology that requires low, stable power over long periods of time. And especially sources of energy which takes a lot more money, time and manpower to replace.

In case people are worried about the possible radiation from nuclear waste, the diamond encasing would absorb any and all forms of radiation. This would render the batteries perfectly harmless for medical and entrepreneurial use.

The UK has close to 100,000 tonnes of nuclear waste at its disposal. And most of these nuclear wastes take on the form of graphite blocks. Most of the nuclear plants are thought to be decommissioned by 2030, which makes this project a lot more necessary. The researchers are hoping that they institute a factory that would help with the conversion of nuclear waste into near-infinite sources of energy.

Tom Scott, one of the professors involved in this project, is of the opinion that the main theme behind this project is the institution of a factory at the South West nuclear plant. The factory would help in the direct transformation of the C-14 isotopes straight into the batteries made of diamond. Ultimately, it would help in the management of the rest of the materials.

Considering the state of UK’s nuclear plants by the next decade, this is a Godsend opportunity to draw out as much energy possible from nuclear waste. This will ultimately benefit a great many number of consumers.

Farmer Sets Up Trough For Animals To Drink From While The Australian Bushfires Rage On

By Mayukh Saha

The Australian bushfires continue to devastate Australia for over a week now. And while ecologists believe that mitigation processes might help in afforestation, there is no way that the wildlife loss wouldn’t be a major shock to the entire country. This emu farmer has set up a drinking pool for animals. All the dams are quickly drying up, making it difficult for the wildlife to survive.

Most people are supporting the firefighters in their struggle to control the fire. But some are trying to help the animals that have been worst affected by the Australian bushfires. Steve Irwin’s family has been responsible for treating almost 90,000 animals that have been wounded over the last few months. Now, an Australian farmer couple has set up a drinking pool on their emu farm, where animals can come and quench their thirst. Henley’s emu farm is located in New South Wales and is operated by Penny and Phil Henley.

The duo has also installed a ramp that leads directly to the water supply. This ramp was for those animals that have tiny feet or are flightless. The situation is getting critical as around 480 million animals have perished in the Australian bushfires since September, as reported by the University of Sydney.

Prof. Chris Dickman mentions that New South Wales has lost around three million hectares in the last ten days itself. But he also states that while most large animals like kangaroos and emus would be able to get away from the fire, animals such as koalas and echidnas will not be able to.

Even animals like the echidna are coming to drink water from the pool. Echidnas are known to drink water only when they are extremely thirsty.
